NEW TESTAMENT OF THE BIBLE:
  • Luke 1:5 – During the time when Herod the Great ruled Judea, there was a Jewish priest named Zechariah. He belonged to Abijah’s section.a His wife came from the family of Aaron. Her name was Elizabeth.
  • Luke 2:36-38 – Anna, a prophetess, was there at the temple. She was from the family of Phanuel in the Asher tribe. Hanna was very old. She had been married for seven years. 37She had been a widow for 84 years. Anna was always at the temple complex; she never left. She worshiped God day and night by fastingh and praying. 38Anna was standing there at that same moment, thanking God. She began to talk about that baby to everyone who was waiting for God to bring salvation to Jerusalem.
  • Luke 3:19-20 – (Later, John denounced Herod Antipas, the ruler, by saying, “You were wrong to marry Herodias. Herodias is your brother’s wife!” John also rebuked Herod for the many other evil things which Herod had done. 20Then Herod did another evil thing (it was the worst thing of all)—he put John in prison).
  • Luke 3:23-24 – Jesus was about 30 years old when he began to teach. People thought that Jesus was Joseph’s son. Mary was Heli’s…
  • Luke 1:6-7, 22 – They were both truly righteous before God, doing everything which was right and everything the Lord God commanded. They were spiritually spotless. 7However, they had no children. Elizabeth could not have a baby. And, both of them were very old…f 22Then he came outside, but he could not speak to them. Then the people realized that he had seen a vision inside the holy place. Zechariah couldn’t speak; he could only make signs to the people.
  • Luke 1:62-63 – Then they began to make signs to his father, asking: “What would you like to name him?” 63Zechariah motioned for something to write on. Then he wrote, “His name is John!” All of the people were surprised.
  • Luke 1:68-69 – “Praise the Lord God of Israel. He watches over His peopleand He has given them freedom. 69He has given us a powerful Savior from the family of David, His special servant.
  • Luke 1:57 – When it was time for Elizabeth to give birth, she had a son.
  • Luke 1:59-63 – Eight days later, they came to circumcisej the child. They wanted to name him Zechariah, because this was his father’s name. 60But his mother said, “No! He will be called John, instead.” 61The people said to Elizabeth, “But no one in your family is named John!” 62Then they began to make signs to his father, asking: “What would you like to name him?” 63Zechariah motioned for something to write on. Then he wrote, “His name is John!” All of the people were surprised.
  • Luke 1:67-79 – Then Zechariah, John’s father, was filled with the Holy Spirit. He told them what was going to take place: 68“Praise the Lord God of Israel. He watches over His people and He has given them freedom. 69He has given us a powerful Savior from the family of David, His special servant. 70God’s holy prophets who lived long ago said that He would do this. 71He will save us from our enemiesand from the power of all those who hate us. 72God said that He would give mercy to our fathers and remember His holy covenant. 73God vowed to Abraham, our ancestor, 74that He would rescue us from the control of our enemies, so that we could serve Him without fear. 75We will be holy and righteous before God as long as we live. 76Now you, little boy, will be called a prophet of the Highest One. You will go ahead of the Lord to make His roads ready. 77You will cause His people to know that they can be saved, through the forgiveness of their sins. 78With the loving mercy of our God, a new day from heaven will shine upon us. 79God will help those people who don’t understand, people who dread death. He will lead us in the way which goes toward peace.”
  • Matthew 2:11 They went into the house and saw the little child with Mary, his mother. They bowed down to worship him. They opened their treasures and brought him gifts—gold, perfume, and precious spices.
  • Matthew 2:16 – When Herod realized that the wise men had made a fool out of him, he was very angry. He ordered his men to kill all the little boys in and around the town of Bethlehem—the boys who were two years old or younger (the exact time which Herod had figured out from the wise men).
  • Matthew 2:13-14 – After they had gone, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to Joseph in a dream. The angel said, “Get up! Take along the little child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I speak to you again. Herod is about to begin searching for the little child to kill him.” 14So, Joseph got ready. He took along the little child and his mother at night and left for Egypt.
  • Mark 10:14-15 – When Jesus saw this, it bothered him. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me! Don’t stop them, because the kingdom of God belongs to people who are like these little children. 15I am telling you the truth: You must accept God’s kingdom as a little child accepts things, or you will never enter it!” 16Jesus put his arms around the children. He put his hands on them and blessed them.
  • Matthew 2:21-23 – So, Joseph got ready. He took along the little child and his mother and entered the land of Israel. 22Joseph heard that Herod Archelaus was ruling over Judea, instead of his father, Herod the Great. Joseph was afraid to go back there. But, in a dream, God told him to leave for the area of Galilee. 23So, he went and lived in a town called Nazareth, so that what God had said through the prophets would come true:
  • John 1:21 – They asked him, “Who are you? Are you Elijah?” John said, “No, I am not Elijah.” They asked, “Are you the Prophet?” John answered, “No.” [Another indication of how shy John grew up to be.]
  • Matthew 11:14 – And, if you are willing to accept it, John is the Elijah who was to appear.b
