BACKGROUND FOR THIS EPISODE

(In Order of Appearance)

NEW TESTAMENT OF THE BIBLE:
  • Matthew 28:16 – The eleven followers went to the mountain in Galilee where Jesus had told them to meet him.
  • Hebrews 4:15
  • John 1:1-2, 14 – In the beginning was the Word,a and the Word was with God, and the Word was deity.b 2He was with God in the beginning… 14The Word became human and lived among us for a while. We saw his glory, the kind of glory like that of the Father’s one and onlyc Son—full of gracious love and truth.
  • John 8:58-59 – Jesus said to them, “I am telling you the truth: I was alive before Abraham was born!” 59They picked up stones to throw at Jesus, but he left the temple courtyard and kept out of sight.
  • John 6:35-51 – Jesus said to them, “I am the food which gives life. The person who comes to me will never be hungry. The one who commits himself to me will never be thirsty. 36I told you, ‘Though you have seen me, yet you still do not believe.’ 37All that the Father gives to me comes to me. I will never throw out the person who comes to me. 38Why did I come down from heaven? It was not to do what I want to do, but to do the will of the One who sent me. 39This is the will of the One who sent me: I must not lose anything that God has given to me. I must restore it to God on the last day. 40This is what my Father wants: Every person who sees the Son and commits himself to him will have eternal life. I will restore that person on the last day.” 41The Jewish leaders were complaining about Jesus, because he said, “I am the food which came down from heaven.” 42They said, “This is Jesus, Joseph’s son. We know his father and mother. Why is he now saying, ‘I have come down from heaven?’ ” 43Jesus answered them, “Stop complaining among yourselves. 44No one can come to me, unless the Father who sent me draws him. On the last day, I will raise that person from death. 45One of the prophets wrote this: ‘All people will be taught by God.’ (Isaiah 54:13) Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from Him comes to me. 46No one has seen the Father. The only one who has seen the Father is the one who was with God. 47I am telling you the truth: The person who believes has eternal life. 48I am the food which gives life. 49Your ancestors ate manna in the desert, but they died. 50There is a type of food which comes down from heaven. If someone eats it, he will not die. 51I am the food which comes down from heaven; it gives life. If anyone eats this food, he will live forever. The food which I will give is my flesh. I want the people of the world to live.”
  • John 8:12 – Jesus spoke to the people again. He said, “I am the Light for the people of the world. The person who follows me will never walk in the darkness. Instead, he will have the living Light.”
  • John 10:7-14 – Therefore, Jesus spoke again, “I am telling you the truth: I am the Gate for the sheep. 8All those who came before me were either robbers or bandits, but the sheep didn’t listen to them. 9I am the Gate. If anyone will go in through me, he will be saved. He may come in and go out as he pleases and find plenty to eat. 10Why does the robber come? Only to steal, kill, and destroy. I came, so that they might have life—to the fullest! 11“I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd gives his own life for the sheep. 12A man who has been hired is not really a shepherd. The sheep do not belong to him. When he sees a wolf coming, he leaves the sheep and runs away. The wolf catches them and scatters them. 13The man doesn’t care about the sheep, because he is a hired man. 14I am the Good Shepherd. I know my followers, and my followers know me,
  • John 11:25 – Jesus answered her, “I am the Resurrection and the Life! The person who commits himself to me will live, even though he may die.
  • John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life! The only way anyone can come to the Father is through me!
  • John 15:1-5 – “I am the True Vine. My Father is the Farmer. 2My Father takes away any branch in me which is not producing fruit. My Father trims each branch which is producing fruit, so that it will produce more fruit. 3You are already clean, because of the message which I have spoken to you. 4Stay in me, and I will stay in you. No branch can produce fruit on its own; it must stay on the vine. In the same way, you cannot produce, unless you stay in me. 5I am the Vine; you are the branches. Who will produce much fruit? The person who stays in me and in whom I stay. You can do nothing without me!
  • Acts 12:1-3 – During that same time, King Herod Agrippa I began to persecute some of the congregation. 2He ordered that James be killed with a sword. (James was the brother of John.) 3Herod saw that the Jewish leaders liked this. So he decided to arrest Peter, too. (This happened during the time of the Feast of Unleavened Bread.a)
  • Matthew 28:16-18 – The eleven followers went to the mountain in Galilee where Jesus had told them to meet him. 17When they saw him, they worshiped him, but some had doubts. 18Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

  • Matthew 16:17-18 – “Upon this rock foundation,”c Jesus answered him, “I will gather my family—those called out by God’s Word. Deathd will not overpower them. Blessed are you, Simon, son of John. My Father in heaven, not man, showed that to you. You are Peter.e
  • Romans 6:4 – So, through immersion, we were buried with him into death. Christ was raised from death through the glory of the Father. In the same way, we will live a new life.

John said, “I need you to immerse me, yet you are coming to me!?” 15Jesus answered him, “Allow this for now, because this is the proper way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John did so. 16After Jesus was immersed, he came up from the water immediately. Look, the sky was opened for him. He saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove. 17Listen, a Voice came from heaven and said, “This is My Son, and I love him, I am very pleased with him!”
  • Matthew 28:19 – Therefore, after you’ve gone out, make followers for me from every ethnic group.b Immerse them by the authority of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • John 14:26 – The Comforter will teach you everything. He will cause you to remember everything I have told you. He is the Holy Spirit. The Father will send him with my authority.
  • Colossians 2:12-14 – You were buried with Christ by immersion. You were also raised with Christ through believing in the power of God who raised Christ from death. 13When you were spiritually dead in your sins and your human nature was not circumcised, God brought you back to life with Christ. He forgave all of our sins. 14God wiped away the written code with its strict orders. It was negative; it was against us. He took it out of the way. He nailed it to the cross.
  • I Corinthians 9:5 – Does not each of us have the right to travel with a Christian wife?a Yes. We have the same right as the other apostles, brothers of the Lord Jesus, and Cephas [Peter].
  • Matthew 28:20 – Teach them to obey everything I commanded you. Remember, I will always be with you—even until the end of time!”
  • John 19:25-27 – Jesus’ mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary from the town of Magdala stood near the cross. 26Jesus saw his mother and the follower whom he loved standing there. • I Corinthians 1:12 – To each one of you who is saying, “I belong to Paul”; “I belong to Apollos”; “I belong to Cephas”; or “I belong to Christ”; this is what I have to say…
(This happened during the time of the Feast of Unleavened Bread.a)
  • Galatians 2:1,9 – After 14 years, I went up with Barnabas to Jerusalem again, and I took Titus along with me… 9James, Cephas, and John seemed to be the main leaders. They knew that God had given me grace. So, they accepted Barnabas and me. They said, “We agree. You should go to non-Jewish people. We will go to the Jews.”f
  • Matthew 24:1-2 – Jesus left the temple courtyard. While he was walking away, his followers came to him to show him the beautiful buildings of the temple area. 2Jesus said to them, “Do you see all these things? I am telling you the truth: Everything you see here will be destroyed. No stone will stay on top of another. Everything will be completely destroyed!”
  • Revelation 1:9 I am John, your brother. In Jesus I share with you the trouble, the endurance, and the kingdom. I was on an island called Patmos. They put me there, because I proclaimed the message of God and the evidence about Jesus.

Now I know that you revere God—you have not held back your son from Me. And, he is the only promised son you have!”13Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram behind him. It was caught in the thick brush by its horns. Abraham went over and got the ram, and, instead of offering his son, he offered up the ram as the whole burnt-offering sacrifice.h 14And, Abraham named that place “Yahweh-Yireh.”i (This expression, “It will be provided at Yahweh’s mountain!” has lasted until this day.) 15Again, the Angel of the Always-Present One called out to Abraham from the sky, 16“The Always-Present One says: ‘I hereby make a vow—sworn on My own authorityj—that, because you’ve done this thing, and you have not withheld your son, your only promised son,k 17I will surely bless you. Then she placed the baby inside the basket and put the basket among the reeds near the edge of the Nile River. 4The baby’s sistere stood at a distance to find out what would happen to the baby. 5Pharaoh’s daughter came down to the Nile River to take a bath.
