ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA
- BAR MITVAH – [Summary] Bar Mitzvah, wherein a Jewish boy was admitted to the congregation of worshippers at age 13, was not introduced until the middle ages, and not formally instituted until the 19th century. Even then, there was also instituted a confirmation at age 16 or 17. There is nothing of significance in the Old Testament about the age of twelve. The only significant age is 30 when most men were considered “men.”
